Electric cars emit no pollutants and have a much lower carbon footprint than comparative petrol or diesel-powered alternatives. They are also silent, making them ideal for city driving by reducing the amount of noise pollution which plagues urban hubs. The capital cost of electric cars is typically slightly higher than traditional piston-powered vehicles, but they are cheaper to run and maintain in the long term. Popular car brands in South Africa, including Volkswagen, aims to start selling electric cars in 2022.

BMW’s newest crossover SUV, the iX3, is a worthy addition to the expanding family of electric variants. BMW’s iX3 is a more affordable all-electric SUV option for those interested in the company’s previous all-electric offering, the iX.

Volvo’s latest offering in our domestic market is the XC40 P6 Recharge, and orders were accepted from the 26th of July, 2022. Volvo Car South Africa claims that its one-motor version of the XC90 is the most reasonably priced all-electric luxury vehicle in the country.

BMW’s electric fleet is expanding. A four-door Gran Coupe with all the bells and whistles wrapped in classic Bavarian styling and powered by a punchy electric heart. The M50 is positioned as a forerunner in the company’s electric segment. The M50, as a member of the M family, is a performance-oriented electric Gran Coupe that doesn’t sacrifice creature comforts for genetic athleticism.

Mercedes EQS Range

The first fully electric Mercedes-Benz to bear the AMG badge has made its way to the African continent in the form of the EQS. Its lineage is similar to that of the sumptuous S-Class, but it offers a greener alternative to high-end transportation without sacrificing any of the S-potency. Mercedes have since released the EQA, EQB and EQC range into Mzansi too.

Audi E-Tron Range

The Audi e-Tron 55 Advanced, priced at R1 990 000, kicks off the lineup. This is increased to R2 045 000 by the S-line. The Audi e-Tron 55 Sportback will be available only in S-Line trim and will cost R2 115 000. While the top-of-the-line performance S variant costs R2 425 000.

Mini Cooper SE – R723 000

Its electric motor will deliver 135 kW and 270 N.m to the front wheels through a single-speed transmission (and an integrated differential), allowing it to sprint from 0 to 60 km/h in 3.9 seconds and from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. The maximum speed is limited to 150 km/h, and it is one of the most affordable electric vehicles on sale in South Africa.

Four driving modes will be available: mid, sport, green, and green+. Interestingly, the new Cooper SE is also the BMW Group’s first electrically powered model with a toggle switch that allows the driver to control the degree of energy recuperation efficiency (effectively allowing the driver to configure the system’s braking effect).

Porsche Taycan – R2 179 000

Following our time with the Taycan, some CAR team members took a closer look at what Porsche has accomplished by going electric. Despite being supported by a version of the J1 Performance modular platform used by the Panamera, Bentley Continental GT, and Audi e-Tron GT, it is only about 40 mm longer than a Porsche 911.
