Toyota and Suzuki have a longstanding agreement where Toyota can cherry-pick cars from Suzuki’s fleet, and in return, Suzuki receives some of the firm’s cutting-edge electrification technology. While we are on the cusp of seeing hybrid technology make an appearance in Suzuki’s new generation models, we have a handful of Suzuki-sourced models available in Toyota’s current lineup.
Let’s delve into the latest sales figures for each of the aforementioned models.

- Toyota Starlet: 1 187 units
- Suzuki Baleno: 436 units
Separated in price by a few thousand Rand, these five-door hatchbacks with nearly identical offerings have experienced a slight decline in sales compared to performance in June.
- Toyota Vitz: 301 units
- Suzuki Celerio: 108 units
One of the best options available in the local market for those seeking a budget-friendly A to B appliance, the bit-sized hatch has seen a hearty increase in sales from June. Little wonder why when it comes to value for money from both automakers!
- Toyota Rumion: 254 units
- Suzuki Ertiga: 568 units
This is the only instance in July’s sales figures where a Suzuki-badged model outperformed the identical Toyota-badged variant. Additionally, since June, both models have seen an increase in sales.
- Toyota Urban Cruiser: 382 units
- Suzuki Grand Vitara: 351 units
Nearly neck-in-neck in terms of sales, these identical cross-overs are distinguished by the disparity in price and offerings. Although the Urban Cruiser is the cheaper option, its range lacks the lust-worthy AWD Hybrid Suzuki range-topper that emboldens the Grand Vitara’s appeal, although this specific derivative is limited to far more modest numbers as a result.
“South Africa posted a marginal increase in new vehicle sales in July 2023, affected by the decline in demand for passenger cars. Aggregate domestic new vehicle sales in July, at 43 389 units reflected an increase of 567 units, or 1,3%, from the 42 822 vehicles sold in July 2022.” – Naamsa sales report for July 2023
With a history in South Africa spanning decades, Toyota has amassed one of the strongest dealer networks nationwide which is another aspect of their badge-engineered successes in comparison to their Japanese counterpart. This, along with arguably the best reputation in the business for reliability has resulted in some firece brand loyalty. Despite this, Suzuki continues with their endeavours locally, achieving impressive sales results in the passenger segment month after month. Just based on the badge, which would you take?
