Although mid-month data may vary at the end of the month, the Automobile Association (AA) has warned that a steep increase in fuel prices is expected for September.
It has been a tumultuous year for motorists. The price of fuel has experienced dramatic undulations from month to month.
Price increase expectations
- ULP93: R1,41/L
- ULP95: R1,45/L
- Diesel: R2,60/L
If these expectations were to come to fruition, the price of ULP93 could increase from R22,43/L to R23,84/L inland, while the coastal price could rise from R21,71/L to R23,12/L. The price of ULP95 could increase from R22,83/L to R24,28/L inland, and the coastal price may increase from R22,11/L to R23,56/L. If these prices were to remain true following the final midnight adjustments on the 6th of September, this will be the most expensive ULP93 and ULP95 of the year.

Diesel is anticipated to experience the most significant price increase. If these predictions prove true, then the most costly variant of diesel (50ppm, inland) could cost as much as R23,13/L, and the least expensive (500ppm, coastal) may cost R22,09.L. Much like the price of petrol, this predicted increase would inflate the price of diesel to the highest point it’s been this year.
“These surges in prices will pile pressure on all diesel users, but particularly large users in the agricultural, retail, manufacturing, and retail sectors. Consumers should brace for increases at the till as costs are recovered through higher prices,” – the Automobile Association of South Africa

The adjusted fuel prices will be made available by the 4th of September and the final midnight adjustment is set for the 6th of September.
“We must also note that this is mid-month data, and the prices may vary before the official adjustments, but the current outlook is certainly pointing to significant increases at that time.” – the AA
