Did we expect anything less? Alfa Romeo have blown the automotive world away with their all-new 33 Stradale which will only have 33 units produced – all of which have been sold and can be had in either fossil-fuel-powered flavour, or as an EV.

As we expected, Alfa Romeo has rebirted the 33 badge for their newcomer supercar. This is in fact what Alfisti have been waiting for although the model will be produced in highly limited numbers like the original with which it shares its name.

Looking for a new or used Alfa Romeo? Find it here with CARmag.

Undeniably sharing its silhouette and styling cues with its late 1960s predecessor, of which only 18 were crafted, the contemporary 33 Stradale still features a mid-engined design. The retro-inspired body will be painstakingly handcrafted by the artisans at Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera – the same coachbuilders that have worked with the brand for years and brought the 8C-based Disco Volante to life. This marks the second instance in recent history where Alfa Romeo has received a completely bespoke coachbuilt body, following last year’s Giulia SWB Zagato.

In contrast to its ancestor, the modern-day 33 Stradale is somewhat less exclusive, as Alfa Romeo plans to produce 33 of these vehicles. All of which have already been reserved after a private viewing event on the 11th of September last year. Each car will be a “unique and unrepeatable work of art,” meticulously crafted by a dedicated team, offering an array of customization options.

Image: Alfa Romeo

Owners can choose their own custom VIN number, comprising eight hand-selected digits, which will also be prominently displayed on the centre tunnel. Featuring butterfly doors, this high-end Alfa Romeo boasts a carbon fibre monocoque, an aluminium H-frame, and a roof fashioned from a combination of these materials. Even the window frames are constructed from carbon fiber, with the rear glass being substituted with polycarbonate.

Image: Alfa Romeo

Jumping inside, and the 33 Stradale boasts two distinct themes: Tributo and Alfa Corse. While the former pays homage to the classic car, the latter exudes a sportier character. The cockpit-style interior incorporates leather, carbon fibre, aluminium, and Alcantara materials while faithfully preserving the essence of its 1960s predecessor.

Image: Alfa Romeo

In terms of powertrain, this is where things get interesting. Many expected this to be a re-bodied Maserati MC20, sharing the same underpinnings with the Italian sibling however the twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 engine is rumoured to be an evolution of Alfa Romeo’s own potent 2,9-litre V6 which features in the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio models. Power comes in at 462 kW while torque figures have not been listed but are expected around 600 N.m (if the Quadrifoglio, Giulia GTA/GTAm, and the previously mentioned Giulia SWB Zagato are anything to go by). Shifting is handled by an eight-speed dual-clutch DCT which is channelled to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential

Even more interesting, buyers can also opt for the sultry supercar to be motivated by a 560 kW electrified powertrain with 1 350 N.m. Range for the model is similar to the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore at 450 km on a WLTP cycle. It is suspected that it features the same EV powertrain from its Trident-badged counterpart but this is not confirmed.

Both V6 and EV models are poised to sprint to 100 km/h from a standstill in under three seconds and onwards to the top speed of 333 km/h. We know which flavour we’d have ours in, what about you?

The updates include a revised front grille with the brand’s signature star pattern, redesigned rear LED lights, an upgraded infotainment system, and improved driving assistance features. While the visual changes are not drastic, they align the EQB with Mercedes’ growing range of electric vehicles.

The front bumper has been reshaped, and the taillights now have parallel lines instead of rectangular LEDs. Additionally, there are new wheel options, including an 18-inch design, two 19-inch designs, and a 20-inch wheel.

Stepping inside, the EQB boasts a new steering wheel with haptic controls. Mercedes has also introduced two “sound experiences” that mimic engine noise during acceleration and deceleration, but this feature is only available with the Burmester surround-sound system. The infotainment system has been updated with the latest software, offering three visual layouts: “Subtle,” “Sporty,” and “Classic.” The voice assistant has also been improved and the Burmester system now features Dolby Atmos for enhanced spatial audio. Serving as Volvo’s first-ever fully-electric premium MPV, the EM90 is a Chinese Zeekr 009 in drag. Here are the details ahead of its launch in November.

EM90

Debuting on the 12th of November, Volvo is about to venture into the unknown world of MPVs with their EM90. Originating as a rumour at the beginning of the year is now becoming a reality for Volvo.  Never experimenting with MPVs before, the Swedish automaker plans on debuting its inaugural minivan described as a “Scandinavian living room on the move.”

Related: Review: Volvo XC60 Beast 2.0

This is where Zeekr comes in with their 009. Also falling within the Geely group’s several brands, the Chinese-built minivan will be the basis of the EM90 which we can vaguely see in the provided teaser image. From this view, a quick comparison shows that the structure seems to be largely unchanged.

Image: Zeekr

More teasers are scheduled to be released leading up to the unveiling, but for now, all we get to see is the panoramic sunroof for rear passengers, complemented by a smaller glass section for the driver and front passenger. As a minivan, the sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle take centre stage, indicating ample accessibility. Volvo’s maiden MPV appears to boast enough space to accommodate three rows of seating.

Assuming that the EM90 is essentially a reimagined 009 with distinctive taillights and illuminated Volvo branding at the rear, it’s expected to be generously proportioned. Zeekr’s boxy van measures 5 209 mm in length, 2 024 mm in width, and 1 867 mm) in height, supported by a substantial wheelbase of 3 205 mm. It can be configured with either a 2+2+2 or 2+2 seating arrangement and carries a substantial weight of 2 830 kg although this may significantly reduce the range on its electrified powertrain.

Speaking of which, it will be built on the SEA platform, which is shared by the Lotus Eletre and Polestar 5. With the Zeekr 009, a pair of electric motors generates a combined output of 398 kW. This power propels the minivan to 100 km/h in just four and a half seconds. Its colossal 140-kWh battery promises a range of 822 km according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC).

The debut date coincides with the opening of the order books in China, the home base of its parent company, Geely which is where the model is expected to be dominantly sold. If it does eventually make it to South Africa, it will be the only electrified model in the premium segment, with its only rival being the Mercedes V-Class people carrier.

Bentley marked the 20th anniversary of its iconic grand tourer with a special one-off Continental GT Speed, paying homage to the original 2003 model.

Continental GT Speed

This original Continental GT played a pivotal role in Bentley’s resurgence, achieving impressive sales and representing the first modern Bentley developed under the Volkswagen Group.

During Monterey Car Week, Bentley showcased the very first production Continental GT, VIN20001 alongside a third-generation Continental GT Speed inspired by it. Both cars shared the classic Cypress Green paint, Saddle leather upholstery, and Burr walnut veneer. However, as the modern version was crafted by Mulliner, Bentley’s in-house customization department, it boasted some additional features.

Continental GT Speed

The unique model combined elements from the Blackline, Touring, and Styling specifications, featuring polished black accents and carbon-fibre enhancements such as a front splitter, side skirts, and diffuser. The 22-inch Dark Gray Satin sport wheels proudly displayed self-leveling Mulliner badges. Throughout the vehicle, you could find badges celebrating “20 years of the Continental GT by Bentley Mulliner,” along with drawings outlining both the 2003 and 2023 models on the fascia, centre console, and door sills.

Continental GT Speed

Under the bonnet, the Continental GT Speed features the exclusive twin-turbocharged 6,0-litre W12 engine, just like its predecessor. However, this latest iteration produces an impressive 484 kW of power and 900 N.m of torque, compared to the original’s 411 kW and 649 N.m. Power is channelled through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, sending it to all four wheels.

In addition to the unique model, Bentley introduced a special Continental GT “baton” that embarked on a global tour through Europe, Asia, and the U.S. During this journey, its stewards collected 20 mementoes, which would be placed in a time capsule upon their return to Bentley’s U.K. headquarters, serving as a lasting reminder of the car’s remarkable journey.

Previewed at the Festival of Motoring, Suzuki is gearing up for the arrival of the highly anticipated Suzuki Jimny 5-door in South Africa.

Jimny 5-door

Before introducing the 5-door Jimny, Suzuki kept its promise to unveil two other models in the South African market – the Suzuki Fronx and the XL6 people mover. With those launches successfully behind them, the 5-door Jimny is on the horizon.

Compared to the three-door version, the extended Jimny offers minimal exterior alterations. It is powered by a K15B 1,5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, generating 75 kW of power and 130 N.m of torque. Buyers can choose between a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of dimensions, the 5-door Jimny is 360 mm longer and features a 340 mm longer wheelbase, measuring 2 590 mm. Its width and height remain unchanged and the ground clearance still sits at 210 mm. However, the approach, breakover, and departure angles have slightly adjusted, measuring 36 degrees, 24 degrees, and 47 degrees respectively, as opposed to the three-door variant’s 37, 28, and 49 degrees.

Ford’s Puma has finally been confirmed for South Africa, plugging a massive gap in the Blue Oval’s lineup. Arriving to the party a few years after its global introduction, here is what rivals it will go up against when it hits showroom floors.

Puma

Image: Ford

Looking for a new or used Ford? Find it here with CARmag.

Ford recently confirmed their local lineup would be bolstered by the addition of a new entry-level model. Entry-level nowadays means costing around R500 00 in the body style of an SUV, to appease the mass market. This in mind, the Puma is not as fresh as you’d think since it has served in Europe since the turn of the decade and is expected to go through a mid-cycle refresh by early 2024.

The Romanian-produced Puma has achieved considerable success in the European market but models destined for the first-world continent are often priced above their competition locally. Here are a few current contenders that could go blow for blow with the Puma, parameters are pricing between R450 000 and R550 000 while offering similar kit and appeal.

BAIC Beijing X55

Kicking off the list of prospective competition that may steal the Blue Oval’s limelight is the Beijing X55 which offers impressive value for money. The lineup starts at R420 900 for the entry-level Dynamic while the range-topping Premium model will set buyers back R480 900.

  • Starting price: R420 900
  • Powertrain: 1,5-litre turbocharged inline-four
  • Power: 130 kW
  • Torque: 305 N.m
  • Claimed fuel consumption: 7,2 L/100 km

Image: BAIC

Volkswagen T-Cross and Taigo

Battling with the Puma from Volkswagen are the MQB-based T-Cross and Taigo SUVs. Starting from R399 000, the compact model offers an impressive entry price but can quickly be increased with a shopping list worth of optional extras. The more comparable 85 Kw Comfortline listed below would be a more fitting rival to Ford’s newbie although a peppy 110kW R-Line derivative is also available for R541 900.

  • Starting price: R456 100
  • Powertrain: 1,0-litre turbocharged inline-three
  • Power: 85 kW
  • Torque: 200 N.m
  • Claimed fuel consumption: 5,3 L/100 km
2024 T-Cross

Image: Volkswagen

Following a similar recipe for optional extras, the Taigo lineup starts at R475 000 with the Life derivative and can inflate all the way up to R537 100 for R-Line. Key difference between this and its T-Cross sibling is its swooping roofline, offering a more aesthetic and sporty appeal to prospective buyers.

  • Starting price: R475 000
  • Powertrain: 1,0-litre turbocharged inline-three
  • Power: 85 kW
  • Torque: 200 N.m
  • Claimed fuel consumption: 5,4 L/100 km

Renault Captur

Simplified into two derivatives and offering handsome standard features, the French firm means business with the Captur. Starting at R469 999 with the Zen while the Intens will set buyers back R499 999.

  • Starting price: R469 999
  • Powertrain: 1,3-litre turbocharged inline-four
  • Power: 113 kW
  • Torque: 270 N.m
  • Claimed fuel consumption: 6,6 L/100 km

Omoda C5

Breaking onto the scene as a more premium Chinese SUV offering, the Omoda C5 continues the tradition of its compatriots value for money methodology. Pricing starts at R447 900 and goes up to R509 900 for the range-topping model in a lineup comprising 5 models. Listed below is the C5 1.5T 230T Lux.

  • Starting price: R477 900
  • Powertrain: 1,5-litre turbocharged inline-four
  • Power: 115 kW
  • Torque: 230 N.m

  • XL6 1.5 GLX 5MT: R341 900
  • XL6 1.5 GLX 4AT: R360 900

As a more premium option for consumers seeking the multi-person hauling Suzuki-badged offerings, the XL6 is priced fairly higher than the Ertiga. As a reminder, the Ertiga’s base model is accompanied by an R265 900 pricetag while the range-topping 1.5 GL AT model is offered at R325 900.

At the core of the Ertiga sibling is the firm’s K15B 1,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which delivers an output of 77 kW and 138 N.m. The naturally aspirated four-pot is mated to either a five-speed “do-it-yourself” gearbox or a four-speed automatic gearbox.

We have yet to receive information regarding the local derivative, however, India’s offerings are kitted with features such as a multi-function steering wheel, a 7,0-inch touchscreen, rear parking sensors, and automatic air conditioning.

The range-topping GLX models are endowed with leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera and an upgraded sound system.

In regards to its styling, the Eritga familiarities are unmistakable. The XL6 is distinguished by its stocky physique punctuated by the shapely headlights in front with an all too familiar rear end. The XL6 is founded on a pair of 15-inch wheels overseen by black wheel arch cladding.
