How to Renew Your Car License Online in 2022

By: Nelson Kalula

Online car license renewals have been well-received according to the latest insights from the SA Post Office.

It is estimated that the Post Office system has been used to renew more than 37,000 vehicle licenses across South Africa, with the majority of those renewals occurring in Gauteng.

They say that the system’s initial kinks have been worked out and it’s now running smoothly.

After completing the online payment and car license renewal, all that is left is to access the disc.

  • To avoid the R75 delivery fee, customers can opt to pick up the disc from any Post Office branch of their choosing, which is free of charge.

According to the Post Office, “Payment is done safely and securely through your bank’s Masterpass app, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for Android devices or the Apple App Store for Apple devices,”.

Because the group is licensed to renew car licenses, there is no commission on the transaction. In order to do your car license renewal online, you’ll need to upload all of the necessary paperwork. Included in this are:

  • A certified copy of the car owner’s ID
  • If the vehicle is registered in KwaZulu-Natal, proof of address that is not more than three months old is required.

When the disc is ready to be picked up at the destination Post Office or is on its way to the recipient, an SMS is sent to the customer.

There will be a 10-day turnaround time for this service.

In order to avoid having to pay another month’s license fee, the Post Office suggests starting the car license renewal process well before the end of the month.

According to the group, the online renewal service for driver’s licenses does not completely replace the current renewal service available at certain Post Office branches.

At a Post Office, customers can pay their license fee and walk out with a new one right away.” Customer pays only license fee as it appears on the renewal notice, and Post Office does not charge any commission as with online renewal.”

Vehicle owners in the Western Cape will still have to wait their turn to access these services.
